The Top Ten Movies That Make Me Pee A Little

by Shari on November 7, 2011

Topten
For some inexplicable reason, I woke up this morning with "Groundhog Day" in my head.

Specifically, the scene where Bill Murray's character keeps trying to commit suicide because he is so distraught over having to live the same day every single day. The expression on his face when he realizes he can't even escape through death is so tragically hilarious that I woke up laughing out loud and had to run to the bathroom to prevent peeing in my jammies.

Then I went back to bed (because now I'm enjoying this) and tried to make a mental list of my ten favorite comedies of all time.

The ten movies that make me pee a little. Not in any particular order.

1. Groundhog Day

This is the screenplay I wish I had written.

2. The Princess Bride

Where I fell in love with Mandy Patinkin. For you, Inigo, I will prepare to die.

3. The Great Race

A sentimental favorite, mostly because Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk just kill me.

4.  Best in Show

My husband and I have entire scenes from this memorized.

5.  Young Frankenstein

I laughed when I was thirteen, and I still laugh now.

6.   Bringing Up Baby

If you've never seen the 1938 screwball comedy with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, you are seriously missing out.

7.   The Philadelphia Story

The most intelligent comedy ever written and I also had a mad crush on both Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart.

8.   My Favorite Year

A gorgeous, bittersweet comedy with the near-perfect Peter O'Toole.

9.   Zoolander

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. But oh, does it make me laugh.

10.  The Jerk

See explanation of #9.

11. This is Spinal Tap

Yes, this list goes to 11.

Now it's your turn, my dear readers. What makes you laugh until you wet yourselves?

So stupid I know…but the Austin Powers movies are just too funny. Office Space since it nails corporate america. Being John Malcovich. Hmmm…what else. OKay dating myself here, but I really like Better off Dead. Total classic with lots of one liners. Big is another fav of mine too. So yeah I could just go on and on.
BTW I though Zoolander was just hysterical too.

More Steve Martin, more Steve Martin! (And Michael Caine, of course, who manages to be wonderful even in the worst films)

Big yes to Austin Powers. And the documentary section in Being John Malkovich, where they rewrite his life as a pupeteer, definitely makes me pee.

Bridesmaids, Best in Show, Barefoot in the Park, Anchorman, 40-yo Virgin, About a Boy, Four Weddings and a Funeral (not the funeral part), Two Weeks Notice (it’s not good, but it always cracks me up), Bridget Jones, Office Space, Shrek 1 & 2, A FIsh Called Wanda, High Fidelity, Bowfinger… Is that too many?

Spaceballs, Strange Brew, The Great Outdoors. Classics.
Also, “The Grapes of Wrath” original version makes me leak. But from sad, not funny.

yep, Sarah, I almost put Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin and About a Boy on the list. They are major runners-up. (Runner-ups?)

Great List. Jerk was a great one. Also, like After Hours, Tootsie, Midnight Run, Office Space, Outrageous Fortune

My favorite thing in Office Space? The boss played by Gary Cole. Brilliant.

Midnight Run! Good one! Love that movie.

Ashamed to say that the only movie on your list I’ve seen is “Zoolander.” I don’t watch much TV. I personally get a huge kick out of the View Askew movies, but I’ve got a very sophomoric sense of humor.

It typically takes a LOT to make me laugh so I tend to avoid comedies out of fear of disappointment. But, Meet the Parents – freakin’ hysterical.

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. Cant beat that combo.

I think about “Groundhog Day” every day, ironically.

Reply

dusty earth mother November 8, 2011 at 8:21 am

Now Im intrigued, Sara. Why do you think about it every day?

Reply

sara November 8, 2011 at 8:25 am

Because I see the same people walk by me on the sidewalk at the same time of day, go to A&P everyday, blah, blah . . ..

Oooh, I love comedy lists! Princess Bride is SUCH a favorite and honestly, every single film that Christopher Guest did – although Best In Show might be the best of his. And really, anything with Parker Posey. That chick is hilarious.
And…don’t make fun of me…scenes from The Hangover are killer. And Anchorman.
Stay gassy, San Diego.

Anchorman. Have seen it about fourteen times. Im going to punch you in the ovaries.

Spinal Tap is one of the funniest movies of all time. As is almost any of the Best In Show guy’s movies … though that one is one of the best. God, I need to watch those again. And now I’ve realized it has been too long since I’ve seen Groundhog Day. For my own list, I’d have to add Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Reply

dusty earth mother November 9, 2011 at 8:56 am

Completely agree with you on Holy Grail, Jenners.

You have to rent the French comedy “Le Diner des Cons.” It’s the original for Dinner for Shmucks and I don’t think the copy can be nearly as funny as the original, need for subtitles notwithstanding.

Reply

dusty earth mother November 9, 2011 at 11:00 am

I heard the original was really funny, Jennie. The remake was kind of a bomb, wasnt it?

Woot!
Love all of these – and I have to add “Blazing Saddles,” which may be my all-time high-water mark for funny movies.
“They said you was hung.”
“They was right.”
*snort* OMG, just thinking about it is killing me.
Fantastic list, my dear!!
XOXO
